Testing for Base Coat Color and Color Patterns in Alpacas

Starting in 2026, the University of Tübingen will regularly conduct color gene testing in alpacas. This testing includes:

  • Base colors MC1R and ASIP plus markers that explain the color intensity of the base color
  • Classic Grey
  • White Spot
  • Roan
  • Spotting
  • Appaloosa
  • Spots

Alpaca breeders who have tested their animals

List of farms that have conducted color gene tests or participated in the European study on the color genetics of alpacas (marked ***) and have a complete color gene profile including color samples of their breeding animals.


Samples and Sample Collection

Sample material for DNA analysis is collected using a blood card or EDTA blood. EDTA blood has to be shipped instantly because it has to be frozen within 3 days after collection.
