Testing for Base Coat Color and Color Patterns in Alpacas - Painter Test

The so called "Painter-Test" will be offered by the University of Tuebingen by spring 2026. This test is conducted by sequencing method and  goes beyond the previous testing for base coat color and Classic Grey.

This Painter-Test includes:

  • Base colors MC1R and ASIP plus markers that explain the color intensity of the base color
  • Classic Grey
  • White Spot
  • Roan
  • Spotting
  • Appaloosa
  • Spots

Samples and Sample Collection

Sample material for DNA analysis is collected using a blood card or EDTA blood. EDTA blood has to be shipped instantly because it has to be frozen within 3 days after collection.
